About Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey
Updated: April 12, 2026
Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey is a monastery and retreat center in Northern England, dedicated to the practice of meditation within the Serene Reflection Meditation Tradition of Buddhism. The monastery offers retreats, festivals, and events for those interested in deepening their meditation practice. Established Sangha members can stay in the monastery outside of retreat time. Retreats are for existing congregation members only, but experienced members can discuss options with the Guestmaster. The monastery aims to make teaching accessible to everyone, so reservations should be made at least one week before the start of introductory, weekend, and three-day retreats, two weeks before week-long retreats, and one month before Jukai (The Ten Precepts Meeting). Children are welcome to attend Sunday festivals, but not for introductory retreats. To book a retreat, please read the section on booking retreats and fill in a registration form.
